Mission Statement and Competitive Analysis Process

As the homework description guided, I start with reviewing mission statements from relevant companies. I was impressed by three products when doing the competitive analysis: Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge. Tinder and Bumble’s mission statements are really detailed. While Hinge’s mission statement it’s clean and neat: We want anyone looking for love to be able to find it.

After doing the competitors analysis, I realize that I need to focus on two things to make my product stands out. One thing is connecting people through events, which are also deeply related to people’s passion, what they love to do. And for the other side, the project is also about helping these two strangers who are looking for a companion to do things together get to know each other within a short amount of time. I want to pursue something clean and neat as Hinge’s mission statement. So I removed those details such as unused time, short amount of time, etc. And settled down with this statement: Connect people through things they love and help them know each other. I kind of want to remove the second half as well and only leave “Connect people through things they love”, but I worry that this will make the entire statement too broad. Still trying to decide…

As for the competitive analysis, I was really surprised by how well some of the apps did the introduction pages. The interaction is really great, and they are easy to read. Hinge allows users to like a specific part of people’s profiles. For Hily, you can even comment on some parts of the user’s profile. The integration of Instagram and Spotify for Tinder and Bumble is smart as well, providing one more aspect to know a person.
